Winter Cluster

In January the hive is a single body of forty thousand bodies, holding a temperature of ninety-five degrees at the center, knowing nothing of January, knowing only the work of remaining.

I press my ear to the wood. The sound is a single low note continuously sustained, the way a cellist sustains a note for which there is no end written, only a long fermata under the staff.
