Mount Zion was founded in the autumn of 2021 by a translator, a printer, and a former bookseller who had each, separately, grown tired of the speed at which contemporary publishing seemed to be running.
We publish eight to ten titles a year, in fiction, poetry, essays, and the occasional translation. Each edition is designed in-house, set in EB Garamond and Hanken Grotesk, printed letterpress at the Tipografia Marchesi in Verona on Magnani Pescia paper, and sewn and bound by hand in our small bindery in Ottawa.
We pay our authors a 15% royalty on print, 25% on digital, and a $4,000 advance against royalties. We do not accept advertising. We do not sell our mailing list. We have, to date, declined every offer of acquisition.
Selection
We read on rolling submission, but commission as much as we read. Every title is championed by two editors before it is acquired.
Design
Each book is set by hand in our preferred faces and printed letterpress on Magnani Pescia. The cover is the last decision, never the first.
Distribution
We sell direct, through a small network of independent bookshops, and through one wholesaler. We do not appear on Amazon.
